Tips for Supporting Your Student

Support your student in their major and career exploration process – For most fields and professions, choosing a major is not equal to choosing a career. A student’s major path is one piece of their career exploration process, but students will also hone their career interests by engaging in clubs, work experiences, and involvement on campus. It is also important for students to reflect on their strengths, interests, and values, as they consider career options.

Encourage them to connect with the Career Center early – We are here to support students from their first day at CSU and can answer questions on any career topic ranging from major exploration to interviewing to graduate school preparation. Students can connect with us through career advising appointments, drop-in services, or attending career events.

Networking is key – One of the most valuable ways that students prepare for their career process is by building and expanding their network. There are limitless options for students to expand their community at CSU with their peers, faculty members, staff, and alumni. Encourage your student to connect with peers in classes, in their residence hall, and by getting involved on campus. Students should plan to attend office hours to build connections with faculty members and network with alumni and employers at career events.
