FAQs:

What types of work are available to CSU students?

Whether it is work-study or student hourly, a micro-internship or a community job, there are plenty of options for employment available to CSU students.  This pdf of “Types of Work for CSU Student” provides more inforamtion.

Handshake is a job posting platform that connects you with employers actively searching for student employees. You will see jobs and internships posted there and find employers actively recruiting at CSU. You can also use Handshake to filter for on-campus opportunities.

Visit the Career Center Resume Guide or watch this video on resume resources now to begin crafting your resume. Want examples specific to your industry? Visit the Career Center homepage and utilize the search bar in the top right corner to search for industry-relevant resume samples. Example: search “tech resume” to see our various resources.

Students typically gain access to Handshake within two weeks of registering for classes. Incoming first year students are often granted access in May if they have committed to coming to CSU.  If you are searching for Fall employment we encourage you to search before you arrive on-campus or to try and find a role within the first four-six weeks of the Fall semester.

Working on campus at least 5 hours a week means stronger graduation rates across all years that students are employed! It’s even shown to contribute to a shorter time to graduation overall. Campus employers are accommodating to your class schedules and there are plenty of opportunities to work near where you live. It’s also a great way to get to know your campus and build your community. Get the facts with the On-Campus Work and Success report.

Once you receive a conditional offer from an employer, they will indicate if the role requires a background check. You will need to confirm/complete some information for that process and then wait for the background check to process. After that, Equifax, on behalf of CSU Human Resources will send you the CSU “RAMp Up hiring packet” that you will need to complete (more information on the RAMp Up process can be found through CSU Human Resources site). Then, the departmental HR will reach out to schedule an in-person verification of your original documents for the I-9 process. Please bring either one document from list A or two documents from list B AND C for review of your employment eligibility. If you are applying to work on campus, having access to these documents is imperative to moving your hiring process forward.

Additional tips

  • Be sure to view your spam/junk folder to see if campus employers have already been contacting you. Employers are more likely to reach out if your Handshake profile has content in it, and your profile is set to “public.”
  • Not sure what you want to do and where to start? Check out this “What can I do with this major?” resource in order to begin exploring job and career opportunities. Or visit this page and select the “get inspired” section.
