When in the Hiring Process do I Reveal that I’m an International Student?

There is no one size fits all answer and this should be assessed for each individual case. Some employers have policies that prevent them from hiring Non-U.S. citizens. However, other employers may be be open to hiring anyone who seems like the best candidate for the job. We recommend focusing on securing an interview with stellar application materials. Once you have completed an interview and demonstrated the value you bring, we recommend students share their work status. This can be done during the first or second interview.

 

An employer MAY NOT ask in an interview:

  • Are you a U.S. citizen? Where were you/your parents born?
  • What is your visa type, nationality, place of birth?
  • What country do you have citizenship status in?
  • What is your native language?

An employer MAY ask:

  • Are you legally authorized to work in the United States? or, Will you now or in the future require sponsorship for an employment visa?
  • Which languages do you read, speak or write? (This question is legal only if this is relevant to performing the job.)
